How much to tip in the US

A tip is a percentage of the bill before tax. At a sit-down restaurant, 18 to 20 percent is the normal range in the United States, 15 percent reads as modest, and 25 percent marks genuinely good service. The math is one multiplication: 18 percent of a $60 check is 0.18 times 60, which is $10.80, for a total of $70.80.

Splitting is where arithmetic goes wrong at the table. Divide the total, not the bill, so the tip is shared as well. This calculator does that automatically and shows how much of each share is tip.

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

In the US, 18 to 20 percent of the pre-tax bill is standard for table service. Fifteen percent is on the low side, and 25 percent signals excellent service. For counter service, tipping is optional and usually smaller.

Do I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Custom is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, though many people simply tip on the total for convenience. On a $60 meal the difference is under a dollar, so either approach is acceptable.

How do I split a check with the tip included?

Divide the total after the tip, not the bill alone. Enter the number of people above and the per-person figure already includes each share of the tip.

What is a 20% tip on $50?

Ten dollars, for a $60 total. A quick mental shortcut for 20 percent is to take 10 percent, which is moving the decimal one place, then double it.
