Length Converter

This length converter turns inches, feet, yards and miles into centimeters, meters and kilometers, and back. Enter one value and every unit updates live as you type, so questions like how many cm are in an inch and how to convert feet to meters are answered in the same view.

What is length conversion?

Length conversion, or distance conversion, rewrites the same measurement in a different unit. Every unit here is defined against the meter, so the tool converts through it with one multiplication:

value in meters = value × factor (1 inch = 0.0254 m exactly)

Since 1959 the inch has been exactly 2.54 centimeters, the foot exactly 0.3048 meters, and the mile exactly 1,609.344 meters. That makes these conversions precise rather than approximate: 6 feet is 6 × 0.3048, which is 1.8288 meters, and 100 centimeters is 100 ÷ 2.54, or 39.37 inches. Only the display rounds; the underlying math does not.

Inches, feet and the metric system

The US customary units, inches, feet, yards and miles, are defined against the meter. Since an international agreement in 1959, one inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters, one foot is exactly 0.3048 meters, one yard is 0.9144 meters and one mile is 1,609.344 meters. Because those definitions are exact, conversions here are precise rather than rounded approximations. Going the other way, one meter is 39.37 inches or 3.2808 feet, and one kilometer is 0.6214 miles.

Everyday conversions to remember

Height is the most common request. Five feet ten inches is 70 inches, and 70 × 2.54 is 177.8 cm; a person listed at 180 cm is 70.87 inches, or about 5 ft 10.9 in. Running distances go the other way: a 5K is 3.11 miles, a 10K is 6.21 miles, and a marathon at 42.195 km is 26.22 miles. For quick mental math, multiply kilometers by 0.6 to get miles, or miles by 1.6 to get kilometers. The exact factor is 1.609344.

Within the US system the ratios are 12 inches to a foot, 3 feet to a yard, and 5,280 feet or 1,760 yards to a mile. Millimeters are handy for hardware and 3D printing: divide millimeters by 25.4 to get inches, so 10 mm is 0.394 inches and a quarter inch is 6.35 mm. Seeing every unit at once saves a second step. Convert a room measured in feet to meters for a furniture listing, or a trail in kilometers to miles, without switching tools or doing the arithmetic twice.

One footnote for surveyors: the US survey foot, at 1200/3937 meters, is about two parts per million longer than the international foot. It was retired at the start of 2023, and this converter uses the international foot, which is what tape measures, rulers and building plans mean.

Common uses

  • Converting height between feet and centimeters
  • Reading metric measurements on US plans
  • Switching race and travel distances
  • Sizing furniture, rooms and materials
  • Turning millimeters into inches for hardware and parts
  • Checking luggage and package dimensions

When to use it

  • You need to convert 5 ft 9 to cm for a passport, profile or medical form (it is 175.3 cm).
  • A furniture listing gives dimensions in centimeters and your tape measure reads inches.
  • You signed up for a 10K and want the distance in miles for your training plan.
  • A 3D-printing or hardware spec lists millimeters and you need inches.

Frequently asked questions

Exactly 2.54 centimeters, by international definition. So 12 inches, one foot, is 30.48 centimeters, and 36 inches, one yard, is 91.44 centimeters. To go from centimeters to inches, divide by 2.54: 100 cm is 39.37 inches.
Multiply feet by 0.3048. Six feet is 1.83 meters, and a 10-foot ceiling is 3.05 meters. To go from meters to feet, divide by 0.3048 or multiply by 3.281: a 25-meter pool is 82 feet. Enter the value above and the meters row fills in automatically.
180 cm is 70.87 inches, which is 5 feet 10.9 inches, so a little under 5 ft 11 in. To convert any height, divide the centimeters by 2.54 to get inches, then divide by 12 for feet and keep the remainder as inches.
5,280 feet, or 1,760 yards. A mile is also exactly 1,609.344 meters, which is why 1.609 is the usual miles-to-kilometers factor. A quarter mile is 1,320 feet, and the 400-meter lap on a running track is about 1,312 feet, a little short of it.
Yes. One mile is 1.609 kilometers. Enter miles as the value and read the kilometers row. A 26.2-mile marathon is 42.2 km, and 100 km is 62.1 miles. For a rough figure in your head, add 60% to the miles, or take 60% of the kilometers.
Divide by 25.4. So 10 mm is 0.394 inches, 50 mm is 1.97 inches and 100 mm is 3.94 inches. Going the other way, multiply inches by 25.4: a half inch is 12.7 mm.
Yes. US length units are officially defined against the meter, so the tool uses exact factors, not estimates. The only rounding happens in the display, which shows up to six decimal places for small values and two for values of 100 or more.
26.22 miles, or 26 miles 385 yards. The official distance is 42.195 kilometers. A half marathon is 21.0975 km, which is 13.11 miles, and the popular 5K and 10K races are 3.11 and 6.21 miles. Enter the kilometers above to see the miles row.
