Worked example
Wide, college and narrow ruled explained
US notebook paper comes in three standard rulings. Wide ruled, also called legal ruled, spaces lines 11/32 of an inch apart, which is 8.7 mm, and is normal for elementary school. College ruled uses 9/32 of an inch, or 7.1 mm, and fits 35 lines on a Letter page here, which is why it is standard from middle school upward. Narrow ruled at 1/4 inch, or 6.35 mm, packs 40 lines onto the same sheet.
The vertical margin line on US paper sits 1.25 inches from the left edge. This generator draws it in the traditional pink so it matches the notebook paper people expect, and it can add a matching right-hand margin if you want a symmetric page.
Because the ruling is drawn to true measurements rather than scaled to fit, printing at 100 percent gives you lines that match a real notebook. If your printout looks slightly compressed, the print dialog has quietly selected ‘Fit to page’ instead of ‘Actual size’.
