How to use it

  1. Pick a grid type, spacing, color and line weight, then choose Letter or A4.
  2. Click Print, or press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on a Mac).
  3. Set the scale to 100% or Actual size, never Fit to page, so the spacing prints true.
  4. Keep margins at Default or None; the page carries its own 0.5 in / 10 mm margin.
  5. Check the preview shows one clean page, then print.

Grid spacings and what they suit

Quarter-inch squares are the standard for US math class and general use, giving four squares to the inch. One-fifth inch, five squares to the inch, is common in engineering pads, while one-eighth inch suits fine drawing and small handwriting, and one-tenth inch is the choice for detailed plots. In metric, 5 mm is the everyday size, 4 mm is common in school exercise books, 2.5 mm is for fine work and 10 mm gives big squares for young children. Dot grids have become popular for bullet journaling because the dots guide your writing without boxing it in.

Printing at true scale

Because this generator draws the grid on the fly, the spacing is accurate to the paper, not stretched to fit like a resized image. Pick Letter (8.5 × 11 in) or A4 (210 × 297 mm) and the page is laid out at true size with a 0.5 inch or 10 mm margin, so nothing is lost to a printer's unprintable edge. In the print dialog choose 100% or Actual size, never Fit to page, and the squares come out exactly as labeled. A quick check with a ruler: a quarter-inch grid should show 4 squares per inch, and a 5 mm grid should show 20 squares across 10 cm.

Grid types and line weight

Squares give plain graph paper. Ruled lines give writing paper at whatever spacing you choose, which is useful for handwriting practice. The dot grid shows only the intersections. The graph option adds a heavier line every five squares, the engineering style that makes counting easier and keeps large plots readable. Set line weight to thin for a faint grid that sits behind your work, or bold when the lines need to stand out, and switch the color to black if a pale blue prints too light on your machine.
